TOPIC 3: EVOLUTION CALL
This is what i have learned about this topic which is the evolution of call. There are 3 phases of CALL development which is Behaviouristic, Communicative, and Integrated.
- Behaviouristic CALL is based on the behaviourist or structural theories of learning. it was conceived in the 50's and implemented in the 1960's. In their original design (programmed instructional), program entailed repetitive (mindless) drills, commonly referred to as drill and practice (drill and kill).
- Communicative CALL was developed between 1970s and 1980s. All Call courseware and activites should build on intrinsic motivation and should foster interactivity. The purpose of the CALL activity is to stimulate student's discussion, writing, or critical thinking. The program do not necessarily provide any language material at all, but rather empower the learner to use or understand language.
- Integrated CALL is the stage when the technology becomes invisible, embedded in everyday practice (Bax,2003). It became popular with the development of high speed internet and widely accessible hypermedia.
